Basic Rules of Poker

Poker

Whether you are new to the game of Poker or you are a veteran, there are a few basic rules you must know. It is important to remember that in a game of Poker, the highest hand wins.

The game of Poker is played with a standard deck of 52 cards. These cards are ranked from ace to king. Each card has a suit and rank, as well as a value. The lowest hand is 7-5-4-3-2 in two or more suits. The highest is known as the Royal Flush.

Poker is played with a group of people around a table. Cards are dealt face up or face down. A player’s hand can be checked, folded, or raised.

The initial dealer deals the cards to the players one at a time. The dealer can choose to pass out the entire deck or cut it into sets. A player may also be required to contribute to the pot before the cards are dealt.

The players then begin betting. The betting process is typically done in a clockwise fashion. The player who bets the most, or raises, is said to call. During the betting process, all but one player folds.

After the cards are passed out, another round of betting is done. The player who checks may stay in, but may not compete for the pot. The remaining player collects the pot without revealing his hand.

If there are ties, the highest card breaks them. If there are two people tied for the highest card, the high card breaks the ties.
