I\u2019ve interviewed lottery players\u2014people who spend $50, $100 a week on tickets\u2014and they\u2019re clear-eyed about the odds. They\u2019ve tried all kinds of quote-unquote systems that aren\u2019t based on statistical reasoning, about buying their tickets at certain stores or times of day or splitting their numbers between even and odd, but they know that the odds are long. And they\u2019re willing to play, because they know that if they win, it will be life-changing.
