Each player begins with a supply of poker chips. Each chip is worth a different amount, depending on the denomination of the chip. Typically, a white chip is worth the minimum ante or bet, a red chip is worth five whites, and a blue chip is worth 10 whites. A player may “buy in” for a certain number of chips, or may purchase additional chips throughout the game.<\/p>\n
After the ante or blind bets are made, the dealer shuffles and cuts the deck, then deals the cards to the players in turn, beginning with the player to his left. Cards are dealt either face up or down, depending on the poker variant being played.<\/p>\n
Generally, players in late positions can make more aggressive bets than those in early position, since they can better manipulate the pot on later betting streets.
